1st Grade
Week 10: 5/26-5/29
It's our last week of music class! Since we can't have an in-person talent show our last week of school, we'll do a virtual one instead. Here's how it works:
On the sharing board, you can also see the talents of your schoolmates! We have so much talent in our school and I am so excited to see all of your talents.
One final thing! We are going to have an unusual summer this year...I will continue to add things to my website as I discover new fun ideas for you to do over the summer if you want to continue making music. I've already added some new pages to our fun links site, but more will be added as they are discovered, so check it out!
- First, decide on a talent. Since this is a music class, your talent needs to have something music-related. You could sing a song, play an instrument, write your own song, complete a jump rope song or game, make an instrument, do a dance, make a short movie, do a magic show, or any other talent as long as there is music!
- Profanity, bullying, or other inappropriate music/behavior is not allowed.
- Record a video, sound file, or take a picture of your talent. You can actually do this directly from the padlet (link below) to make it simple. The great thing about a virtual talent show is that you can have as many chances as you need until you get it right!
- Finally, upload it to The Sharing Board at https://padlet.com/aprilceleste/9t28clwzdm37 Long videos may have to record directly from the padlet or uploaded to YouTube first. Please let me know if you have any questions or other issues. If you are nervous about sharing it on the Padlet but still want to participate, send it to me at [email protected]. I'd love to see it!

Week 9: 5/18-5/22
This week, we are going on a musical scavenger hunt! I want you to go for a walk outside or look around your house and see if you can find all the music around us! You can watch the video to get some ideas. When you find the items, draw or take a picture of your favorite and upload it to our padlet: https://padlet.com/aprilceleste/9t28clwzdm37

Next week, we are going to have a virtual talent show! So think about what talents you would like to share and keep practicing! More details to come soon.
Week 8: 5/11-5/15
This week you get to choose! Pick an activity or two that you can complete at home. I've added some videos that go with some of the activities in case you need help. Upload your pictures or videos to our padlet!

Week 7: 5/5-5/8
It's a new month! That means it is time for a new Musician of the Month! Our new musician is John Williams. Click on the button below for a Nearpod lesson to learn all about him and the kind of music he is famous for! The code is SUWBC.
Week 6: 4/27-5/1
This week, we will listen to our favorite music! I want to know what your favorite song is! Then, you get to ask someone what their 3 favorite songs are (this is a great chance to connect with family and friends outside of your home). Then, I want you to listen to all 3 songs. You can often find links on YouTube or other sites if you do not have access to the songs. After you listen to all 3 songs, come back here and fill out the form to tell me about the songs. I am excited to hear back from you! And as a bonus, I've put my favorite songs down below for you to sample!

Week 5: 4/20-24
I loved seeing all the rhythms you sent to me last week! I hope you loved getting to hear what your songs sounded like as much as I did. This week, we will review quarter notes and eighth notes. There is a link to a game below. Click on the raccoon to hear his rhythm. Then, click on the correct rhythm. If you did it correctly, he will do a little dance!
After you have practiced your rhythms with the Dancing Raccoon, I want you to find a few things at home that you could use to practice rhythm. A few examples: your homemade instrument, kitchen utensils (make sure to ask first), a real instrument (if you have one to use), items in the recycle bin, and even your own body. You will be practicing keeping a steady beat. Follow along with the video below. Every time Sandra changes instruments, I want you to change how you are keeping the beat, too. It's a pretty fast beat...can you keep up the whole time?
Week 4: 4/13-17
Directions:
This week you're going to get to be a composer! I will show you an example and then give you space to practice, then finally you will get to write your own music. I can't wait to hear what you make up!
In music, we use lines to show if a note is high or low.
Using our low, medium and high notes (L, M, H), we can make a melody that moves up and down. Here is an example:

Now it's your turn! You can print and use the picture below, or draw your own on your own paper. Be sure to write as neatly as you can. Try to include 12 notes. Once you send it back to me, I'll play and record your music and send it to you so you can hear what it sounds like! I have lots of instruments at my house to play your song! Let me know if you'd like me to play your song on the guitar, ukulele, bass, violin, or piano! You can email me at [email protected].
Here is an example created by Brooke. Click the file below to hear what it sounds like!

Week 3: 4/6-4/10
We have a new Musician of the Month! Our new musician this month is Weird Al Yankovic. You can learn about him in the nearpod lesson on the button below. While you listen the songs, I want you to listen for the beat and pat the beat on your lap. When you hear the parody, I want you to clap the rhythm.
When you are finished with the Nearpod lesson, you get to write your own parody! I want you to write a parody about something that has happened to you this year.
Some tips:
1. Pick a song that you know well! Songs like "Twinkle, Twinkle", "Down by the Bay", "Day-O", holiday songs, or your favorite movie song are great.
2. Decide what you will write about. This can be the hardest part.
3. Try to think some words for your song and try to fit the words into the song.
4. You might have to try to write it more than one time. It took me 3 or 4 tries for my song!
5. Practice your song! You can do a whole song, or just a small part of one.
6. Parodies are supposed to be funny! The funnier, the better!
7. When you are done or if you need help, email me a video or recording of your song at [email protected] or upload it to the Sharing Board at https://padlet.com/aprilceleste/9t28clwzdm37. I would love to see what you came up with! My virtual office hours are 1-2 pm, but I will also check throughout the day.

Week 2: 3/30-4/3
Don’t forget to warm up your voice before singing! Which warmup has been your favorite: Mama Made Me Mash My M&Ms or Never Hug a Hibble?
Did you know that YouTube has so many songs with the lyrics on the video? Practice your sight reading by singing songs at the same time! Here are a bunch of my favorites:

Have you ever thought about making your own instrument? Did you know you can make an instrument with items you have around the house? Today, make your own instrument with items you have at home. My personal favorites are the spoon castanets, box guitar, and kitchen xylophone. I’ve attached some links for some ideas:
