2nd grade
Week 10: 5/26-5/29
It's our last week of music class! Since we can't have an in-person talent show our last week of school, we'll do a virtual one instead. Here's how it works:
On the sharing board, you can also see the talents of your schoolmates! We have so much talent in our school and I am so excited to see all of your talents.
One final thing! We are going to have an unusual summer this year...I will continue to add things to my website as I discover new fun ideas for you to do over the summer if you want to continue making music. I've already added some new pages to our fun links site, but more will be added as they are discovered, so check it out!
- First, decide on a talent. Since this is a music class, your talent needs to have something music-related. You could sing a song, play an instrument, write your own song, complete a jump rope song or game, make an instrument, do a dance, make a short movie, do a magic show, or any other talent as long as there is music!
- Profanity, bullying, or other inappropriate music/behavior will not be tolerated.
- Record a video, sound file, or take a picture of your talent. You can actually do this directly from the padlet (link below) to make it simple. The great thing about a virtual talent show is that you can have as many chances as you need until you get it right!
- Finally, upload it to The Sharing Board at https://padlet.com/aprilceleste/9t28clwzdm37 Long videos may have to record directly from the padlet or uploaded to YouTube first. Please let me know if you have any questions or other issues. If you are nervous about sharing it on the Padlet but still want to participate, send it to me at [email protected]. I'd love to see it!

Week 9: 5/18-5/22
This week, we are going to use some our new Coronavirus vocabulary and turn it into music! I've got two activities this week: The first one, you will clap the word from the vocabulary list and try to figure out which rhythm it matches. The second activity, fill in the missing letters from the staff (remember to start from the bottom and remember FACE and EGBDF!) to spell some fun, safe activities you can do if you get bored. An example is done for you. You can print out the pages to fill out or write on your own paper and send to me at [email protected] to see how many you got right!
Next week, we are going to have a virtual talent show! So think about what talents you would like to share and keep practicing! More details to come soon.
Week 8: 5/11-5/15
This week you get to choose! Pick an activity or two that you can complete at home. I've added some videos that go with some of the activities in case you need help. Upload your pictures or videos to our padlet!

Week 7: 5/5-5/8
It's a new month! That means it is time for a new Musician of the Month! Our new musician is John Williams. Click on the button below for a Nearpod lesson to learn all about him and the kind of music he is famous for! The code is SUWBC.
Week 6: 4/27-5/1
This week, we will listen to our favorite music! I want to know what your favorite song is! Then, you get to ask someone what their 3 favorite songs are (this is a great chance to connect with family and friends outside of your home). Then, I want you to listen to all 3 songs. You can often find links on YouTube or other sites if you do not have access to the songs. After you listen to all 3 songs, come back here and fill out the form and tell me about the songs. I am excited to hear back from you! And as a bonus, I've put my favorite songs down below for you to sample!

Week 5: 4/20-24
This week you're going to get to be a composer! Do you remember our staff notes that we were practicing before Spring Break? FACE in the SPACE and Elephants Got Big Dirty Feet!
I will show you an example and then you will get to write your own music. I can't wait to hear what you create! Here is an example of the music to "Twinkle, Twinkle". Can you see how the notes go up and down on the staff?

Now it's your turn. You can draw it on your own paper, or use the picture below to help you. Try to have a total of 10-12 notes, and be sure to label the notes with the letter on the staff that belongs! Then, you can send it to me and I will send a video of your song back to you so you can hear what it sounds like! You can even choose your instrument from the ones I have at home: piano, ukulele, violin, guitar (electric and acoustic), and bass guitar. Have a parent or older sibling help you upload a picture of your rhythm to our Highland Park Music Sharing Board: https://padlet.com/aprilceleste/9t28clwzdm37 or email it to me: [email protected] along with your instrument choice. I will try to send back all rhythms by 6 pm on the day they are sent.
Week 4: 4/13-17
Rhythms are some of my favorite thing to practice. But before we learn more about rhythms, we need to review steady beats. If you have an instrument at home, or something you can use as an instrument (pots or spoons work great!), grab that before you watch the video. Can you keep a steady beat the entire time? How many different ways can you keep the beat?
Next, lets review with quarter notes and eighth notes. There is a link to a game below. Click on the racoon to hear his rhythm. Then, click on the correct rhythm. If you did it correctly, he will dance!
Week 3: 4/6-4/10
We have a new Musician of the Month! Our new musician this month is Weird Al Yankovic. You can learn about him in the nearpod lesson on the button below. While you listen the songs, I want you to listen for the beat and pat the beat on your lap. When you hear the parody, I want you to clap the rhythm.
When you are finished with the Nearpod lesson, you get to write your own parody! I want you to write a parody about something that has happened to you. I put one my family made below this post.
Some tips:
1. Pick a song that you know well! Songs like "Twinkle, Twinkle", "Down by the Bay", "Hamster's Can't Play the Piano", "Stand by Me", holiday songs, or your favorite movie song are great.
2. Decide what you will write about. This can be the hardest part.
3. Try to think some words for your song and try to fit the words into the song.
4. You might have to try to write it more than one time. It took me 3 or 4 tries for my song!
5. Practice your song! You can do a whole song, or just a small part of one.
6. Parodies are supposed to be funny! The funnier, the better!
7. When you are done or if you need help, email me a video or recording of your song at [email protected] or upload it to the Sharing Board at https://padlet.com/aprilceleste/9t28clwzdm37. I would love to see what you came up with! My virtual office hours are 1-2 pm, but I will also check throughout the day.

Week 2: 3/30-4/3
In Music class, we have been learning about reading the notes on the staff and how each of the lines and spaces represent a different pitch. What better way to practice with various pitches than by creating your own instrument out of items you probably have at home!
Gather your supplies:
• 8 wine glasses, drinking glasses or jars ideally the same or almost the same size
• Water
• Metal spoon
• Food coloring (not required – just for fun)
Make your Instrument:
Arrange the eight glasses in front of you in a line. Fill each of the glasses with different
levels of water. You can add food coloring just for fun if you like.
Tap the first glass with the spoon and listen to the sound. Then try another. Each glass
will have a different sound. Can you tell the difference? Try creating a song or a simple tune.
I'd love to see a picture or a video of your homemade instrument! Send it to me at [email protected]

Here's a video showing how to make a water xylophone.
Here is my second grade son Caleb with his water xylophone:
Here's some awesome videos of people playing homemade xylophones.

If you enjoyed making a water xylophone, try making another instrument out of everyday items! I’ve attached some links below with some ideas to get you started:
